Directions to Kathy and Rick's places
in Pasadena and Santa Barbara

I. Pasadena

439 S. Catalina, #306, Pasadena, CA 91106
Kathy's cell phone: 805.886.9384.
Home phone: 626.792.1369.

When you get here: Search for "Wilson" on the building directory and press "call". We will buzz you in.

A. To Pasadena from the east or north (from LA, Santa Barbara, etc.) on 101, 134, 210.

Short form

Get off the 210 at the Lake Ave. exit, and turn right onto Lake (go south, away from the mountains). Go about 3/4 miles and turn left onto Del Mar. After two short blocks, turn right onto Catalina Ave. We are almost at the end of the block, on the right. Click here for maps.

If you start on the 101, stay to your left whenever you have a choice, until you get to Pasadena. From 101, take 134 East (tend to the left; do not take 101 South to Hollywood, but follow the Burbank, Glendale, and Pasadena signs). The 134 ends and becomes 210 East as you approach Pasadena, so don't be confused by the 210 signs—just follow 210 East.

Five or ten minutes after passing through Glendale, you will see signs "Rose Bowl Next 3 Exits" and then "Pasadena Next 9 Exits". I think Lake Ave. is the 5th Pasadena exit (it is hard to count). You will need to get over to the right. In fact, new lanes come in on the right as you approach Lake, and you will need to move further to the right, several times. After you get off the freeway, move to the right yet again, because you need to turn right onto the actual Lake Ave. at the stoplight.

As you go South on Lake, you will soon come to Colorado, Green, Cordova, and then Del Mar. There are traffic lights at all these intersections. There is a "Good Guys" with a "Tower Records" above it on the left corner just after where you are to turn left onto Del Mar.

Watch out for cars coming out of the parking lot behind Good Guys. There is a traffic light at Mentor; pass that and turn right at your next chance, which is Catalina Ave. There are large numerals near the entrance to our building with the address 439, but they are partially obscured by a tree and not easy to see as you drive by. The entrance is just before the very last driveway on the right, opposite a yellow fire hydrant.

B. To Pasadena from the west (from e.g. Claremont) on 210.

Short form

Get off the 210 at the Hill Ave. exit, and turn left onto Hill (go south, away from the mountains). Go about 3/4 miles and turn right onto Del Mar. After about half a mile, turn left onto Catalina Ave. We are almost at the end of the block, on the right. Click here for maps.

Hill is the next exit after Allen as you go west on 210. (If you wish, or if you miss the Hill exit, you can get off at Lake Ave., turn left, and then follow the directions above.)

After you pass Colorado on Hill, PCC (Pasadena City College) will be on your left. PCC ends at Del Mar, which is where you want to turn right. It is a stoplight.

The street before Catalina is Wilson (a stoplight). No stoplight at Catalina Ave., where you turn left. There are large numerals near the entrance to our building with the address 439, but they are partially obscured by a tree and not easy to see as you drive by. The entrance is just before the very last driveway on the right, opposite a yellow fire hydrant.

C. To Pasadena from the south on the Pasadena Freeway 110.

Short form

Take the Padasena Freeway north until it ends at a stoplight and becomes Arroyo Parkway. Continue on Arroyo for about half a mile, and then turn right onto California Ave. After about a mile, turn left onto Catalina Ave. Pass the first street (San Pasqual Ave.). We are on the left just after the first driveway on the left. Click here for maps.

If you start on the 10 East, the 110 North exit is on your left as you approach downtown. The Pasadena Freeway is full of curves, as most of you will know. Watch out for the exits and entrances on the right!

California Ave. is a stoplight. There will be a Trader Joes on your right just before (though not at the corner) you are to turn right. You may see a little sign with an arrow saying Huntington Library, or one saying Cal Tech [sic... it should be Caltech].

On California, you will pass Lake Ave., a stoplight with a Wild Oats just before on the right and a Von's Pavillion Place on your left. Catalina is the first street at which you can turn left after that (no stoplight). If you see Wilson Ave. and Caltech, you have gone too far.

There is a stop sign at San Pasqual, and our building entrance is just a few hundred feet further north, on the left. There are large numerals near the entrance to our building with the address 439, though they may not be easy to see as you drive by. The entrance is just after the first driveway on the left, opposite a yellow fire hydrant.

II. Santa Barbara

152 Por La Mar Circle, Santa Barbara, CA, 93103
Kathy's cell phone: 805.886.9384.
Home phone: 805.962.0947

When you get here: Stop at the kiosk and ask the nice man how to get to our place. Basically, turn left after the kiosk and go to the second building, marked "100". If you have driven in, park in a visitor space. We suggest you come up the stairs facing Niños Drive, to the third floor, rather than trying to find the main entrance and then our name on the building directory. The guard will let us know you are coming, so that we can be at the outside door to let you in.

A. To Santa Barbara from the South on 101.

Short form

Get off the 101 at Cabrillo Blvd. (the exit is on the left), which is the first Santa Barbara exit; turn left at the four-way stop signs. After a bit less than a mile on Cabrillo, turn right onto Niños Drive, and then almost immediately right again, into the El Escorial complex. Click here for maps.

Verbose

Monticito and Summerland are signs you'll see on the 101 shortly before the Cabrillo exit on the left.

After turning left at the four-way stop, you will pass Los Patos Way and then the bird refuge on your right. There is a stop light at Niños Drive, which is the first right after the bird refuge. (That is the Pacific Ocean on your left.) Give cyclists and pedestrians the right of way at the crosswalk, of course, after you turn. The little street you are to turn right into is Por La Mar Circle, but the kiosk is right there after a hundred feet or so.

If you prefer, pass the stop sign at Por La Mar Circle and park on the right. Then you can walk back and into the El Escorial complex; but you must stop and say hello to the nice man at the kiosk anyway.

B. To Santa Barbara from the North on 101.

Short form

Get off the 101 at Milpas, after passing through downtown Santa Barbara. Turn right onto Milpas and, after 0.6 miles, left onto Cabrillo Blvd (at the ocean). Turn left at Niños Drive, the second stoplight after turning onto Cabrillo, and then almost immediately right, into the El Escorial complex. Click here for maps.

Milpas is the exit after Garden as you go south on 101. As you drive from the freeway to the ocean on Milpas, watch out for the traffic circle. After the traffic circle, stay all the way to your right or your will end up in a left turn lane. You do want to turn left, but not before Cabrillo.

Niños Drive is the second stoplight, the first left after the Radisson hotel. Give cyclists and pedestrians the right of way at the crosswalk, of course, after you turn.
